St Paul's Cathedral - Floor Plans

ST. PAUL'S CATHEDRAL CRYPT
The crypt contains very many monuments, from the massive (several having been moved there from the body of the church) to simple wall tablets. There are also a large number of floor slabs. I have been unable to find a complete list of these, let alone their positions in the church. Pevsner does not provide a plan of the crypt and I find his descriptions at time rather vague; the RCHM does provide a plan but the monuments are not indicated on it. This is an attempt to provide a basic plan with the various part of the crypt labeled.

Notes

I do not have a modern plan of St Paul's Cathedral which shows the position of the monuments and I have not visited the church since I was aged eleven. The information about the monuments is from the relevant RCHM and Pevsner volumes as well as a few other sources. However the former, although very compressive, had a cut off date so many of the monuments are not included; while the latter is selective and it is not possible to know which monuments, although still present, have simply been omitted. The plan of the body of the church above is based upon an old, now out of date, plan which did have the position of the monuments indicated. Several of the very large monuments, mainly from the North Transept, have been moved to the crypt, a job I am glad I did not have to take part in! A few are not mentioned in Pevsner so it is not possible to say if they are still in the places indicated or not. The latter writer also mentions some monuments which were not included in the original plan, very likely because they post dated the drawing. All of the monuments in the South Transept appear to correspond to the old plan. A few of the monuments which are marked on the old plan as being in the South Chancel Aisle have also been moved to the crypt. For these reasons my new plan will almost certainly be inaccurate but hopefully modifications and corrections can be made in the future.
