DEVON - 2
CITY OF EXETER

Although there is limited street parking in Exeter, it is probably better to park in one of the several pay car parks, which are well signposted; I find The Quay car park the least expensive and only a short walk from the city centre and the Cathedral.

This is as complete as possible record of all the monuments in Exeter Cathedral, with photographs of very many of them. There may well be omissions and errors so I would be grateful for any corrections: please e-mail me.
Exeter was a Cathedral of the Old Foundation so before the Reformation was governed rather like it is today by a Dean and Chapter of Canons - secular priests - and not by a Prior and monks. So here you will find a series of monuments to the Bishops of Exeter; the deans before the Reformation were buried in the chapter house and have no monuments.
I have divided the page into sections for each part of the cathedral, arranged in way you might travel around the church when you visit. The entrance is the north door of the west wall of the nave so turn round, look at the easily missed west wall and then walk down the north aisle of the nave...etc. Unfortunately the monuments in each section have been arranged according to layout requirements and not accoring to geography or history!

The Refectory
Enjoy a cup of coffee while studying this effigy: it's now resting on the windowsill of the refectory, having been cut at some time to make the upper part of some arch. Early knight with straight legs.
There is also a large tomb slab set vertically against a wall but the inscription is totally obliterated.
